For more than a century, the Salvation Army has brought hope to the downtrodden. With 9,222 centers and 60,000 employees nationwide, the Salvation Army touches and helps an average of some 33 million people annually. It is best known for its work with the homeless, the poor, and the addicted. It reaches the younger community with 156,000 children attending summer camps and about 100,000 kids dropping by its community centers every year. The Salvation Army is there in emergencies, dispensing meals, and offering shelter to the displaced. Within a half-hour of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Army officers were on the scene in New York, soon assisted by more than 5,000 volunteers. Similarly, their response to the Hurricane Katrina catastrophe was immediate. The Chronicles of Philanthropy calls the Salvation Army “the #1 charity in the United States.” The Salvation Army National Headquarters 615 Slaters Lane, P.O.
