Foster Grandparents, Senior Companions, and RSVP (Retired/Senior Volunteer Program) assist local nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based organizations. Annually, senior volunteers served an average of four hours a week in 65,000 local organizations. Foster Grandparents like Louise Jackson provide older Americans the opportunity to put their life experiences to work for local communities. They serve at least 20 hours a week as mentors, tutors, and caregivers for at-risk children and youth with special needs through community organizations such as schools, hospitals, drug treatment facilities, correctional institutions, and Head Start and day-care centers. In 2001, more than 30,000 Foster Grandparents tended to the needs of 275,000 children and teenagers.
